Surgical Retrieval MESA & TESA
Overview about Surgical Retrieval (MESA, TESA)
Surgical Sperm Retrieval (SSR) is an advanced fertility procedure designed to help men who are unable to produce or ejaculate sperm naturally. It involves collecting sperm directly from the testes or epididymis using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Two commonly used methods are TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) and MESA (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration).
In TESA, sperm is extracted directly from the testicular tissue using a fine needle under local anesthesia. It’s a quick and effective procedure, especially suitable for men with non-obstructive azoospermia, where sperm production occurs in low quantities. MESA, on the other hand, is a microsurgical procedure performed under magnification to retrieve sperm from the epididymis, usually for men with obstructive azoospermia (blockages in the sperm ducts). The retrieved sperm from either method is used for advanced assisted reproductive techniques like ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) to achieve fertilization.
These procedures are safe, precise, and cause minimal discomfort, allowing sperm to be collected even when none are found in the semen. The collected sperm can also be cryopreserved (frozen) for future IVF or ICSI cycles, reducing the need for repeated surgeries.
Who should go for Surgical Retrieval ( TESA, MESA)
Surgical Sperm Retrieval is recommended for:
-
Men diagnosed with azoospermia, either due to obstruction (blockage in the reproductive tract) or testicular failure.
-
Men with vasectomy or failed vasectomy reversal, where sperm can’t pass through the normal ejaculation pathway.
-
Men with congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD), a condition often linked to genetic causes like cystic fibrosis.
-
Patients with ejaculation disorders, such as spinal cord injury or retrograde ejaculation, where sperm can’t be released normally.
-
Couples undergoing ICSI, where even a single retrieved sperm can be used for fertilization.
At Bhavya IVF, our andrology and embryology teams perform TESA and MESA with the highest precision and care, ensuring the best possible sperm retrieval outcomes. Using advanced microsurgical techniques and cutting-edge lab support, we help couples overcome severe male infertility challenges and move one step closer to achieving their dream of parenthood.
